The Club’s Championship Show moved to a new venue this year, Hood Park Leisure Centre, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This move was made because the Committee believed that Judge, Frank Kane, would pull in a larger entry than our normal venue options would accommodate. It proved to be true, with 75 dogs making a total entry of 36 dogs and 44 bitches.

The venue definitely provided the space that exhibitors had been asking for, if anything perhaps a little too much room. There were a few hiccups to deal with on the day, as I was unable to attend due to illness and was supposed to be one of the Stewards and Beverley Ackling broke down on her way to the show with all the trophies, but in true showbiz spirit, the “Show went on” – thanks must go to everyone who stepped in to help out, including Lynn Ward who so ably assisted Isobel West with the Stewarding and Beverley Watkins who performed both her Presidential role and the Secretarial role and, from all accounts, hardly stopped all day! Apart from the little organisational hitches, the parking situation also proved a little difficult at times, as the Leisure Centre was also open to the public, and it was a bit different not having our caterers at ringside, but in general it seemed things all went off fairly well.

The results continued this year’s trends with names that have featured throughout the year taking all the major prizes. You will probably know their breeding off by heart by now, so I’ve not included it all this time! Jackie Phillips had an exceptional show, taking both the CC and the Res CC in the Bitches with BLAKENS LOOK NO FURTHER and CH MARCHDENS LOOK TO THE SKY FOR BLAKENS respectively, the former going on to take BIS and also gaining that all important third CC to become the latest Champion of the year. Jackie also had the Best Opposite Sex Puppy in JUST THE ONE AT BLAKENS (by Charlie Blake At Moortop out of Didjems Moorhen to Blakens) and showed last year’s top winning Norfolk CH MARCHDENS MARK MY WORDS, to the Reserve Dog CC spot for Denise Horne.

Ruth Gee’s dog CH WATERCROFT CALLING TIME picked up his seventh CC of the year and came away with the Reserve Best In Show and Best Opposite Sex. Ruth’s young dog, WATERCROFT BROWN SUGAR (by Marshmallows Schoko Drops out of Watercroft Dream Topping) took the Best Puppy in Show.

They didn’t quite get a clean sweep between them as two other familiar names got a foot in the door: CH VALENTINES CHERRY CRUMBLE took Best Veteran in Show for Karen Hurrion and Andrea Smith’s JAVIDEL DESPICABLE MAY won Best Novice in Show.
