Congratulations to Matthew Oddie who passed the assessment for both breeds. Many thanks to the hard working committee who organised the event and produced all the supporting paperwork, to the owners but especially to the patient dogs who had to submit to so many people going over them on a table by the assessors and candidates in the afternoon.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Elisabeth Matell on October 13th at home at Standhall Cottage.   She was a unique forceful personality and Norfolk Terriers were her life.  Passionate about the breed, very warm-hearted, fantastically generous, highly articulate, although Swedish was her first language, she wrote and spoke better English than most of us born here with a depth of knowledge and good sense which she put to good use in her superb productions of the Club Handbooks and Newsletters as well as her Breed Notes in Dog World.  Internationally she was a very successful breeder of many champions and with friends throughout the world, and reached the pinnacle of achievement by breeding and co-owning the best in show winner at Crufts in 2005.  It was a privilege to have known her. She was just Elisabeth and will be impossible to replace.

A NORFOLK IS RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
At Darlington on Sunday 16th September owner and breeder, Jackie Phillips,  returned to watch Mary Atkinson handling  the young red dog BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF (Dexter) to win RBPIS from judge Liz Cartledge.  He had won the Terrier Puppy Group earlier on Friday under Valerie Foss, after the breed had been judged by Sue McCourt.  Mary also won the RCC on Friday with his sire, MOORTOP NO CHOICE.   Over 50 years ago she bred the early record holding Ch Colonsay Orderly Dog in March 1960, who went on to win 19 CCs, first as a Norwich Terrier and then as a Norfolk Terrier after separation of the two breeds in 1964, so she has many years of experience in the breed.

5th CHAMPION OF THE YEAR
Winning her 3rd CC with Best of Breed was VILLASSA ALL GOLD who was made up at Richmond by Judge Michael Quinney.  She was bred by Karen Hurrion and is now jointly owned with her handler Phil Davies.

KINSRIDGE GUNG HO WINS PUP OF THE YEAR
After winning the Pup Of The Year bitch class on Monday at PAIGNTON, and then defeating the dog puppy,  Diane Jenkins returned on Wednesday from Stafford to beat the winners from the other two days.   They now go forward to the final in January 2011.

Many congratulations also go to Martin Phillips and JAEVA COMFORT AND JOY who added a third CC and Best of Breed on Monday from the Norfolk substitute judge, Patsy Hollings. Not unexpected, as this judge had given her Group 4 at East of England just a fortnight before.

Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s black & tan BELLEVILLE LORD ANGEL won his third qualifying CC at East of England from Judge, Nan Chadwick, who was awarding CCs for the first time.  His previous successes this year had been in mid June at Border Union, Judge Bryan Claydon and in April from Norma Newton at WELKS.

THREE  IS LUCKY FOR DOT

Congratulations to Dot Britten and KINSRIDGE MAID IN MANHATTAN FOR KRISMA who was awarded her third qualifying CC at Three Counties Show, Malvern, on 8th June, where she was judged by Mrs Cherry Howard. She has won the bitch CC at the three previous shows within three weeks, at the Scottish Kennel Club (Judge Mr Richard Allen), followed by Southern Counties at Newbury, (Judge Mrs Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen).  She must be the fastest champion ever!

A CENTURY FOR JAEVA

History was made at the National on Saturday 7th May when black & tan JAEVA HELLS FURY won her third CC under Judy Averis (Saredon) and became the 100th champion owned or bred by Martin Phillips.  Great cheers broke out round the ringside.

The majority of the Jaeva champions have been Norfolks, but also many Norwich, 3 Soft-Coated Wheatens, a Cairn, a Sealyham, 2 St Bernards and a Flat-Coated Retriever are also included in the tally.   Only one other kennel who showed Norfolks has also done the ton, and that is Ragus, who mainly have Norwich now but have also had Borders and Australians.

So huge congratulations to Martin and his partners and helpers, not least to Andrew Gullick who often handles the terriers, and to his mother Beatrice and Kate Tate who own quite a few of the Jaeva Norfolk champions.  Martin’s first champion was made up in 1984 with Jaeva Bisto Brown, but he had great success with Ch/Am Ch Jaeva Matti Brown and Ch Jaeva Dutch Gold who was twice Best In Show at general championship shows.

JAEVA HELLS FURY WINS
AT THE NTC OF GB SPRING OPEN SHOW

Shown and bred by Martin Phillips, but co-owned now by his mother, Mrs Beatrice Phillips and Mrs Kate Tate, JAEVA HELLS FURY was Best In Show on 16th April, judged by specialist Mrs Liz Hindley from Australia.  Her choice for Reserve Best In Show and Best Dog was Elisabeth Matell’s Swedish Norfolk CANTAB WINNING WAYS OF CRACKNOR.

 SECOND CHAMPION OF THE YEAR
At the National Terriers Show on 2nd April Diane Jenkins’ newly crowned CH KINSRIDGE TOP GUN was Best of Breed under judge Mrs Dot Britten (Krisma) and he was in the final shake up in the Group.  Elisabeth Matell’s CRACKNOR CUSTOM MADE gained her qualifying third CC to become a champion, she is a granddaughter of the famous Coco, Ch Cracknor Cause Celebre.

CH SETTRENDA SAUCY SOX WINS BEST OF BREED AT CRUFTS

Piloted by Linda Cooper and jointly owned with her husband, Terry, they had to rush from the Breed ring to just catch the Terrier Group judging on the Saturday evening. Judge Geoff Corish had drawn a large entry but Norfolks were only third in the ring, so judging did not start until after 2.15pm.  The first champion of the year was made up when Diane Jenkins won her 3rd qualifying CC from the Open Dog class with her KINSRIDGE TOP GUN.

Very well done too to Dorothy and Gina Dorkins for organising and arranging the Discover Dogs booth and the Stand.  The booth was adjudged 1st on Terrier day and Runner Up overall over the whole four day show.  Many thanks too to the volunteers who manned the booth during the show.

The Norfolk Terrier that was thought to have been stolen is found.
It appears that she must have eaten a strong pain killing tablet that had been dropped and she had crawled under an armchair and stayed asleep for many hours.
* Warnings
Norfolks are able to hide in such small places without being seen and this is quite a lesson to look absolutely everywhere when a dog is lost.
We have been told of another Norfolk who went mousing in a pantry and stayed very still behind some sacks of kibble when she was searched for. The door was inadvertently shut on her and she was only found many hours later - she could have died of bloat if she had eaten a lot of the food and there was no water in there either.
Many thanks to those who searched for Myrtle, the lost dog.

The Norfolk Terrier Trimming Day, organised by Rita Mitchell and Margaret Ruffles, and assisted by many other southerners, was a resounding success and enjoyed by everyone.
We will have more news of this later but, for now, here are some photographs showing - the day in full swing, Martin Phillips and Andrew Gullick demonstrating the stripping of a Norfolk and Rita thanking Martin for his hard work and giving him a card and presents.

DOLLY DOES IT AGAIN!
Specialist Judge, Mrs Cathy Thompson-Morgan repeated last year’s memorable win by picking black & tan CH VICHEA PICK AND MIX to be Best In Show at the 2008 Norfolk Terrier Club of GB Championship Show; she is owned and exhibited by Jackie Phillips and bred by Jane Devereux. Black & tans were well to the fore as Jackie’s brother, Martin Phillips, was delighted to win the Dog CC, RBIS & Best Puppy with a youngster at his first championship show – TOM TOM AT JAEVA who put in a very mature performance to beat his red kennel mate, newly arrived from Finland, Nieminen’s FIN CH HEILURIHÄNNÄN FROM ME TO YOU (IMP) who then won the Reserve Dog CC.  Bryan Claydon won the Reserve Bitch CC with BRYMARDEN COPPER KETTLE the winner from the Novice Class.  Show Scene 2008

New in Champions 'Pedigrees: Ch Nordalset Distinctly Dutch For Jaeva

CONGRATULATIONS TO LINDA AND MICHAEL PHILIP
They arrived from South Africa in 2004 then their dogs had to spend six months in quarantine before starting to compete in 2005, but they have quickly established themselves in the Norfolk Terrier world – Linda is now a member of the Committee.  From their first litter bred in this country from two of their Jaeva dogs they had brought back with them, and reaching the showground just in time, NORDALSET DISTINCTLY DUTCH FOR JAEVA gained his 3rd CC and title at the Welsh Kennel Club show from Judge Mr Ellis Hulme.

TRIUMPH FOR CH JAEVA DUTCH GOLD
Also at the WKC CH JAEVA DUTCH GOLD, born in March 1998, was the overall winner of the Pedigree Veteran Stakes – he won his heat against Pastoral, Working and Terrier Veterans on the Saturday from the judge, Mr J Horswell, and returned the next day to compete against the winners from the other days.  ‘Eric’ has had quite a show career, Best in Show at the memorable Norfolk Terrier Club Millennium Championship show and at Birmingham National, plus another Group 1 win in 2001, he then travelled to the USA and gained his American title before returning to win the final heat of the Veteran Stakes at LKA in 2006, going on to win the final in January 2007.  Bred by Martin Phillips he is jointly owned with Andrew Gullick.

ANOTHER TITLE FOR A BELLEVILLE DOG
BELLEVILLE PREMONITON
won his 3rd qualifying CC at Bournemouth under Judge Mr Frank Cane.  He is owned and bred by Cathy Thompson-Morgan and just 18 months old, and makes our 5th champion of the year;  his previous successes had been in Scotland and East of England;  but he was pipped to Best of Breed by Jackie Phillips with CH VICHEA PICK AND MIX.

THE 4th NORFOLK TERRIER CHAMPION OF THE YEAR
The Jaeva team did the double at Three Counties, when judge Zena Thorn-Andrews, presented the dog CC to JAEVA HOLY MOSES – he was bred by Martin Phillips but now in joint ownership of his mother, Mrs Beatrice Phillips, and Andrew Gullick who handled him to all his successes last year at Paignton and Wales.  But they had to give way to the Bitch CC winner in CH JAEVA FALLEN ANGEL for Best of Breed; she is owned by Mrs Phillips and Mrs Kate Tate, but handled by her breeder, Martin Phillips.

TWO ENGLISH BITCH WIN THEIR TITLES
At The National Show, a first ever champion was made up by owner Jackie Phillips and breeder Jane Devereux when VICHEA PICK AND MIX won her third qualifying challenge certificate with Best of Breed, a great celebration for the three of them, following previous triumphs at the Jubilee NTC of GB Ch show and LKA last year.
A week later in Scotland JAEVA FALLEN ANGEL gained her crown, her CCs all won this year at Crufts and National Terrier, she is bred by Jackie’s brother Martin Phillips but owned by their mother, Mrs Beatrice Phillips and Mrs Kate Tate.

AMERICAN CHAMPION DOG WINS HIS ENGLISH TITLE
At WELKS, under specialist judge Mr Bryan Claydon, much travelled AM CH CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION lived up to his name by winning his third CC with Best of Breed and followed up by being placed 2nd in the Terrier Group.  His joint owners Pam Beale, Stephanie Ingram and Elisabeth Matell watched Peter Green handle him in the ring to this unique success; born in the USA, he has an international pedigree, a son of the famous Coco, English bred Ch/Am Ch Cracknor Cause Celebre, by the German export Am Ch Red Cherubim’s Summer Star, who was himself a son of a World champion.

At the AGM of the Norfolk Terrier Club of G.B saw the retirement of the Chairman, Allenby Stevenson, the Acting Secretary, John Mackison, and from the committee, Gail Simpson, who has just been elected Secretary, Elisabeth Matell, who will still be newsletter editor, and the very long-serving committee member, Sally Willbie who has served on the committee for over 30 years as newsletter editor, official photographer, run the Norfolk Terrier Stand, been the rescue representative, the Discover Dogs representative and lastly joint Web Secretary, which task she will hopefully continue.  They have all served the committee with great diligence and dedication and will be sorely missed.
The new Officers and committee are as follows:
President:  Dorothy Dorkins
Treasurer: Juliet Knight
Secretary: Gail Simpson
Committee Chairman: Patsy Green
André Hess, Cherry Howard, Helena Jupp, Cherry Stones were re-elected to the committee together with new members Gina Dorkins, Pam Harris, Judy Mackison and Jill Stevenson.

Sally Brown is taking over the Stand from Dorothy Dorkins who has brought it up to new heights with her daughter, Gina.

Following the AGM the Spring Show of the Norfolk Terrier Club of GB takes place in the afternoon.   Our Judge was Mr David Winsley of Sealyham fame, and his choice for Best In Show was a repeat of our Ch Show BIS: Jackie Phillips with her black & tan bitch VICHEA PICK AND MIX, bred by Jane Devereux.   Mary Atkinson’s dog was Reserve Best In Show with MOORTOP HOT ROLL.   Best puppy went to the Minor Puppy Dog, BRICKIN SMART DISGUISE, owned and bred by Jill Stevenson.

Congratulations to the winner of the Dog CC and Best of Breed at Crufts this year: Mrs Cathy Thompson-Morgan, who owned and bred CH BELLEVILLE RUMOUR NOTHING.
Judged by Mr Brian Baxter, he drew an entry of 95 Norfolks, but it was a very early start at 8.30 in the morning for competitors and supporters on Sunday 9th March.  Cathy also won the Reserve Bitch CC with CH BELLEVILLE SWEETHEART and Best Puppy with her young dog, BELLEVILLE PREMONITION.
Mrs Beatrice Phillips and Mrs Kate Tate owned the Bitch CC winner, JAEVA FALLEN ANGEL, winning her first such award, this bitch who won from the Junior Class was bred by Martin Phillips. The Reserve Dog CC went to Mary Atkinson’s homebred MOORTOP HOT ROLL.

The committee and the members of the club were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Pam Harris on May 6th;  she had only just been elected to serve on the committee at the AGM, but had been helping behind the scenes for several years, and will be very much missed.  She enjoyed showing her young dog, Melas Matchmaker at recent Club Shows and she also had a great interest in Springer Spaniels. Pam was a member of the Kennel Club for many years too, so her background knowledge would have been of great value to us all.   We send our deep sympathy to her husband and family. The Joy Taylor Memorial Lecture will take place on  March 15th 2008. Please look at News from the Club for a notice about this lecture.  Details of the venue and time are in Forthcoming Events.

News from the Club: With the banning of docking of dogs' tails, (except in certain circumstances), the Standard for the breed will be changed. At present the suggestion is the addition of the word 'previously' and (a) and (b) reversed as below.
Tail
Docking of tail previously optional.
(a) Tail of moderate length to give a general balance to the dog, thick at the root and tapering towards the tip, as straight as possible, carried jauntily, but not excessively gay.
(b) Medium docked, set level with topline and carried erect.
