Show Scene 2013

LADIES KENNEL ASSOCIATION

Traditionally L K A is the only championship show in December, and thus the last of the year. It is held over two days at the NEC in Birmingham, and Norfolks were judged on Sunday 15th by Mr Albert Wight. It is the last chance for dogs to qualify for Crufts, and for puppies born before 14th June to enter. There was an excellent entry of 59 different dogs, with 23 dogs and 25 bitches present, the 3rd highest entry of the year after Crufts and the Club show.

Two new youngsters won their first CC’s. Winning his first CC and Best of Breed and later Group 4 in a strong Terrier Group was Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s junior dog BELLEVILLE SEDUCTION, a black & tan son of two red parents, Ch Belleville Burning Passion and Ch Belleville Intuition; surprisingly in two litters she has only produced one red puppy from five offspring, despite the first b&t to appear in her pedigree being Brickin Dun & Dusted as a great great grandfather four generations back. Burning Passion’s sire was b&t Ch Belleville Blacklace.

Dog RCC went to Diane Jenkins’ KINSRIDGE CASH BACK who has 2 CCs and now 4 RCCs to his tally, amongst the males he is second in the winners list; by Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration he is out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip who is runner up in the Brood Bitches list.

Martin Phillips’ won Bitch CC with his young puppy JAEVA PLAY THE ACE, who also went Best Puppy. She is sired by Ruby Rueben out of Ch Jaeva Comfort And Joy and registered as wheaten in colour; she is just 10 months old.

The Bitch RCC went to Jackie Phillips’ CH BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES, who is by Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge out of Ch Vichea Pick And Mix. She is 3rd in the Top Winners list, and runner up best bitch. As Jackie has also produced the Top Winner in Ch Blakens Xpress Yourself, this will undoubtedly make her Top Kennel and Top Breeder this year.

MIDLAND COUNTIES NORFOLK TERRIER ASSOCIATION

The M C N T A held their championship show at Weedon on Saturday 2nd November where the judge was Mrs Liz Cartledge (Ryslip). Her choice for Best in Show and the Dog CC was Norma Newton’s STRATHINVER SMART ENOUGH, who won from a strong Open Dog class. He has already had 3 RCCs this year, but this was his day. He is by the Swedish imported dog Guestlings Fairbanks at Kinsridge out of Strathinver Red Red Rose (by Rouletta Fameuse Le Smart x Strathinver Be Smart).

The dog RCC went to the junior, JAEVA CUFFLINK, in the ownership of Mrs Beatrice Phillips, Andrew Gullick and Mrs Kate Tate, but bred by Martin Phillips by his re-imported Jap Ch Jaeva Roger the Butler out of Know It All at Jaeva.

In the bitch classes Jackie Phillips’ *BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES won her 3rd qualifying CC; a red bitch, she is sired by Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge out of Jackie’s first champion, black & tan Ch Vichea Pick And Mix. She won her first CC in September at Richmond under Geoff Corish, with BOB, and her 2nd a week later at Darlington from Paul Wilkinson. This makes her the 11th champion of 2013 and the 7th bitch to be made up this year.

The Bitch RCC was won by Karen Hurrion’s CH VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE, just coming up to 2 years old; she is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble.

Best Puppy was the minor puppy dog Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT IN A PICKLE, by the BIS Strathinver Smart Enough out of Watercroft Hot Love.

Best Veteran was Mary Atkinson’s bitch, CH HOBSONS CHOICE AT MOORTOP and also being shown today was her grandson and great grandson. The Veteran Dog, Margaret Ruffles’ CH RUFFNOR SECRET TIPPLE was Best of Breed when Liz Cartledge judged at the NTC of GB show in 2004, and he was today represented by a daughter, granddaughter and great grand-daughter.

MIDLAND COUNTIES CANINE SOCIETY

Norfolks were judged on Friday 25th October at Bingley Hall on the Stafford County Showground by Mrs Norma Newton of the Strathinver Norfolk Terriers, and she drew an entry of 15 dogs with 2 absentees but only 8 bitches were entered with one absentee. Best of breed and the dog CC came from the strong Open Dog class won by Jackie Phillips’ CH BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF – his breeding is given at the previous show below; the DRCC was Diane Jenkins’s 15 month old dual CC winner KINSRIDGE CASH BACK who is by Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip.

Following her success at our Club Show and winning her 2nd Bitch CC was Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT TOP OF THE POPS, who is sired by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Watercroft Hot Cake. Jackie Phillips’ BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES was the Reserve CC winner. (Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge out of Ch Vichea Pick And Mix). She too has won 2 CCs this year. On the Norfolk Terrier Club of GB points table Ch Blakens Xpress Yourself is well in the lead from Ch Villassa Cherry Ripple who is lying in 2nd place.

Best puppy was Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT DIAMOND DEALER, who had been 2nd in Junior Dog. He is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Watercroft Hot Stuff.

SOUTH WALES KENNEL ASSOCIATION

This show is now held in the second week of October, Terriers were judged on Sunday 13th, and it is now based on the Royal Welsh showground at Builth Wells. All-rounder Mr Frank Kane was judging the breed; he drew an entry of 17 dogs with 4 absentees, and 19 bitches, with 8 absentees. His choice for the Dog CC and Best of Breed was Jackie Phillips’ CH BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF, who has just had confirmation of his title after now winning his 5th CC. (Ch Moortop No Choice x Vision Express at Blakens).

The Dog Reserve CC went to Norma Newton’s STRATHINVER SMART ENOUGH, who is by Guestlings Fairbanks at Kinsridge, imported by Diane Jenkins from Susann Björkfäll’s highly successful kennel in Sweden, out of Strathinver Red Red Rose, who is by Rouletta Fameuse Le Smart out of Strathinver Be Smart. Congratulations to Andrea Smith on winning her first CC with b&t JAVIDEL DEFINITELY MAYBE who is a repeat mating to her red dog Javidel May Just Have Too, who has one CC also. They are both by Ch Belleville Angello out of Stridview Bluebell, (Ch Jaeva Hot Shot out of Wharfvalley Sapphire). Although both sire and dam are red, a grandparent on both sides is black and tan, so the genes are present for this colour. The Reserve CC went to CH VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE owned and bred by Karen Hurrion; the bitch is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble. Best Puppy was Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE SEDUCTION, a b&t dog by Ch Belleville Burning Passion out of Ch Belleville Intuition.

NORFOLK TERRIER CLUB of GB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

The Club Championship Show was held at the end of September on Saturday 29th at the Brackley Leisure Centre where the judge was Mrs Dot Britten of the Krisma affix. She drew the best entry of the year since Crufts of 31 dogs, with 25 present, and 36 bitches with 24 actually shown, thus an entry of 67 with 18 absentees. Congratulations to Best In Show Jackie Phillips’ dog *CH BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF, this is his 4th CC, all have been won with Best of Breed; he is not yet 2 years old till November, and is sired by Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Xpress at Blakens, whose sire Jaeva Gorden Bennet and dam, Kinsridge Mischief Maker are out of the full sisters Oktumi Emma Em at Jaeva and Oktumi Elude; the latter is also the dam of Ch Kinsridge Top Gun.

Reserve Best In Show, Best Opposite Sex, and winning her first CC was Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT TOP OF THE POPS. Her sire is Ch Kinsridge Top Gun and her dam is Watercroft Hot Cake, by Ch Belleville Angello out of Watercroft Hot Stuff.

The dog RCC went to *CH FONTANESI GOLDEN CHALICE WITH JAEVA, another offspring of Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Back to Black from Fontanesi, in the joint ownership of Martin Phillips and his breeders, Martin Craddock and John Collins. His dam was sired by the temporarily imported Ch/Fin Ch Heilurihännän From Me To You.

Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s bitch BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC won the BRCC, she is only just over a year old, and is by Cathy’s unshown dog Belleville Shoelace Maker out of Belleville Magic Dice. B Shoelace Maker is a half brother to her very successful Ch Belleville Blacklace, both having Ch Belleville Lace Petticoat as a dam. It was a good day for Ruth Gee, as she also won Best Puppy with WATERCROFT DIAMOND DEALER, sired by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of her prolific Watercroft Hot Stuff – I think that makes him an uncle of the Best of Breed!

DRIFFIELD

Norfolks were judged without CCs by Mr Ian Sexton on Saturday 21st September. He drew an entry of 5 dogs and 4 bitches. Best of Breed and Best Dog was Norma Newton’s STRATHINVER SMART ENOUGH, RBD was Andrea Smith’s JAVIDEL MAY JUST HAVE TOO. Top of the bitches was Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT TOP OF THE POPS with Andrea Smith’s JAVIDEL DEFINITELY MAYBE the reserve best bitch. Best Puppy was Ms R Gees WATERCROFT DIAMOND DEALER (by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Watercroft Hot Stuff).

DARLINGTON

Less than a week after Richmond on Friday 13th September, exhibitors headed north to a rather cold chilly Darlington. Judging Norfolks was Mr Paul Wilkinson, and his Best of Breed and winning his 2nd CC was Diane Jenkins’ KINSRIDGE CASH BACK, a son of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip, who had travelled back to England with Peter Green in whelp to Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration.

It was a day for Juniors, as also winning her 2nd CC was Jackie Phillips’ BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES, with the dog RCC going to her litter brother, BLAKENS THE KANDY MAN KAN – they are by Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge out of Ch Vichea Pick And Mix.

Andrea Smith’s JAVIDEL DEFINITELY MAYBE won the bitch RCC, she is by Ch Belleville Angello out of Stridview Bluebell for Javidel.

It was a good show for Norfolks, as Best Puppy, Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT DIAMOND DEALER (Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop x Watercroft Hot Stuff) was later 4th in the Puppy Group, judged by Ronnie Irving. At Darlington there was a Veteran Group as well, judged by Mr T Mather, and Dorothy Dorkins’ NANFAN CHICK PEA reappeared in the show ring to win Veteran Group 4. Born in April 2006, she is from the last litter of Norfolks to be bred by Joy Taylor, by Ch Brymarden Charleston, (Ch Nanfan Creole x Brymarden Close Secret) out of Nanfan Chive who was by Nanfan Clipper out of Nanfan Chillimel.

RICHMOND

A week after City of Birmingham, on Saturday 7th September, comes Richmond, held near Guildford at Losely Park – famous for the delicious ice creams made from their herd of pedigree Jersey cows. Norfolks were judged by Mr Geoff Corish, but exhibitors had problems as they were judged in the main ring where there was precious little space under cover for grooming and cages, when sudden showers of rain pelted down.

There was an entry of 17 dogs, with 1 absentee, and 21 bitches with 6 absent, making a total of 38 entries with 31 present. Jackie Phillips had a very successful show when BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES won her first CC and Best of Breed, and her litter brother BLAKENS THE KANDY MAN KAN won the Dog RCC. They are both red in colour, nearly 13 months old, by Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge who was sired by the imported Swedish dog, Guestlings Fairbanks at Kinsridge out of Kinsridge More Trouble, a Ch Belleville Rumour Nothing bitch, and their dam is Jackie first champion, black & tan Ch Vichea Pick And Mix - she is also the dam of the black & tan sisters Ch Blakens Dolly Mixture and Ch Blakens Toffee Kisses.

Martin Phillips, Martin Craddock & John Collins’ CH FONTANESI GOLDEN CHALICE WITH JAEVA continued his winning ways, with the Dog CC; the bitch RCC was won by Karen Hurrion’s CH VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE, and Best Puppy this time went to Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC, who had only been 3rd in the very strong Junior Bitch class. The breeding of these three dogs is given below in the City of Birmingham paragraphs.

CITY OF BIRMINGHAM

The judge of Norfolks, Mr Tom Johnston drew a reasonable entry at City of Birmingham held at Stoneleigh Park on Saturday 31st August. 16 dogs were entered with 13 present, and 24 bitches with 8 absentees, totals of 39 entered with 29 present. Best of Breed and winning his crowning 3rd CC was *FONTANESI GOLDEN CHALICE WITH JAEVA. Shown expertly by his co-owner Martin Phillips, he is in the joint ownership with his breeders, Martin Craddock and John Collins, whose first champion this is - a memorable event for them. Their red dog is the fourth champion to be sired by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Back to Black from Fontanesi , who was sired by the imported Finish Ch/Fin Ch Heilurihännän From Me To You out of Jaeva Take That, a daughter of Jaeva Gold Leaf.

The bitch CC went to Karen Hurrion’s CH VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE, her 6th such award; she is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble. The dog RCC and Best Puppy went to Mrs Beatrice Phillips, Mrs Kate Tate and his handler, Andrew Gullick’s JAEVA CUFFLINK, by re-imported Jap Ch Jaeva Roger The Butler out of Know It All at Jaeva, and he excelled himself later in the afternoon by being placed Group 2 in the Puppy Group from the judge, Mrs E A Macdonald.

The bitch RCC was won by Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC, who is also still a puppy, she is by Belleville Shoelace Maker out of Belleville Magic Dice. Cathy did well later with her husband, Ed’s Portuguese Water Dog bitch Belleville Anjo De Noite who was Group 3 in the Working Group. She has had problems at some shows when PWD classes clash with Norfolk classes.

SCOTTISH KENNEL CLUB

The August show on Sunday 25th no longer has CCs for Norfolk Terriers, and only Mary Atkinson made the effort to travel to Edinburgh for the judge, Mrs Y Catto. Best of Breed and Best Dog was CH MOORTOP NO CHOICE, and best bitch from the junior class was MOORTOP ANOTHER NO CHOICE. They were the only entries.

WELSH KENNEL CLUB

This was the third consecutive Saturday with a championship show with classes for Norfolk Terriers, this time the representative show, WKC which features all terrier breeds. Although it was fine with drizzle later in the afternoon, judging was held in the bright but noisy and rather smelly cattle sheds, with the benching tents some distance away, so of course, exhibitors congregated in the grooming area. Norfolks were judged by Mr Maurice Marshall who has been judging the breed since 1994. He made up two champions today, so many congratulations to both of them. His Best of Breed and the Dog CC was Jackie Phillips’ *BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF, by Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Express at Blakens, a daughter of Jaeva Gorden Bennet out of Kinsridge Mischief Maker. He won his previous CCs, all with Best of Breed this year at WELKS at the end of April under Cherry Howard and Three Counties from Sherril Goodwin in June.

Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s *BELLEVILLE SILK SLIPPERS has been the bridesmaid in Open four times this year to different bitches. This was her crowning third CC, her previous ones were won last year at LKA under Dorothy Dorkins in December and earlier in this year at The National judged by Peter Bakewell. Homebred, she is the daughter of two of Cathy’s champions, Belleville Lord Angel and Belleville Silk Petticoat. The dog RCC went to Patsy Green’s WHARFVALLEY DIAMOND STAR who is sired by Brickin Smart Outlook out of Wharfvalley Rose Petal, a daughter of the Swedish dog Ch/Swe/Dan Ch Jiffy The Sky’s The Limit x Wharfvalley Rose Cut. He won the dog CC at Southern Counties this year.

RCC in bitches was the first such award for Mary Atkinson’s junior bitch, *MOORTOP ANOTHER NO CHOICE, a niece of the DRCC by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Moortop Shandy Choice. Best Puppy for the 4th times was JAEVA CUFFLINK in the joint ownership of Mrs Beatrice Phillips, Mrs Kate Tate and her handler, Andrew Gullick. Bred by Martin Phillips, he is by the re-imported Jap Ch Jaeva Roger The Butler out of Know It All at Jaeva.

BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth Canine Association have bought their own ground at Organford near Poole. This was the second year for the show here which used to be held in the New Forest. Not an easy venue to reach, as it is quite a long way from any motorways and minor roads carry a lot of holiday traffic in August. There is a long hard haul uphill for those pulling dogs in cages on trolleys from the car park. Luckily it stayed fine, as the wet weather tent was a considerable distance from the outside ring, and space inside that tent was very limited.

Mrs Frances Chapman-King, whose main breed is Dandie Dinmont terriers, was judging Norfolks for the first time. Her choice for Best of Breed and the Dog CC was FONTANESI GOLDEN CHALICE WITH JAEVA, following his success at Paignton last week. He is in the joint ownership of Martin Phillips and his breeders, Martin Craddock and John Collins. He is another son of the very successful sire Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Back to Black from Fontanesi. Yorkshire exhibitors did well as the bitch CC went to Karen Hurrion’s CH VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE, her 5th such award. She is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble, Karen’s first champion.

Both RCCs also came from this county: the RDCC to Norma Newton’s STRATHIVER SMART ENOUGH, who is by Guestlings Fairbanks at Kinsridge (imp) out of Strathinver Red Red Rose by Rouletta Fameuse Le Smart. But the one who really excelled herself was the 11 month old red bitch, Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC, (by Belleville Shoelace Maker out of Belleville Magic Dice) who started by winning the Post Graduate class, then RBCC, but was also Best Puppy. Then later in the afternoon she went on to win the Terrier Puppy Group from judge, Jeff Horswell. Many congratulations.

PAIGNTON

Paignton & District Fanciers’ Association dog section is now held at Westpoint, an arena complex just outside Exeter, which can be quite time consuming to reach as weekend holiday traffic clogs up the roads leading to the South West. This year Norfolks were judged on Saturday 3rd August.

Nan Chadwick was judging Norfolks for the second time and chose for her Best of Breed and Best Dog FONTANESI GOLDEN CHALICE WITH JAEVA, jointly owned by his breeders Martin Craddock & John Collins and his handler today, Martin Phillips; this is a first CC for the Fontanesi partnership. He is by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Back to Black at from Fontanesi, a black & tan bitch by Ch Fin/Ch Heilurihännän From Me To You out of Jaeva Take That, a Jaeva Gold Leaf daughter.

Many congratulations to Ruth Gee, as she won the vital 3rd qualifying CC with her WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE.* This is the first champion she has bred which is a very special moment. Homebred too, she is by Watercroft Hot News (by Ch Belleville Angello) out of Watercroft Get Smart (by Ch Belleville Smart Alec) – see pedigrees. She won her 1st CC at WELKS this year under Cherry Howard, and her 2nd at Windsor from Martin Phillips.

The bitch RCC went to a puppy, Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC (Belleville Shoelace Maker – Belleville Magic Dice) her second such award, but she had to give way to the winner of the dog class for best puppy.

Youngsters were well to the fore as the RCC in dogs and Best Puppy went to JAEVA CUFFLINK from a strong puppy class – he is by re-imported Jap Ch Jaeva Roger The Butler out of Know It All at Jaeva. This is his 3rd BP at championship shows which give CCs to Norfolks. Bred by Martin Phillips, he has now been transferred to the joint ownership of Mrs Beatrice Phillips, Mrs Kate Tate and his handler today, Mr Andrew Gullick. Later in the afternoon JAEVA CUFFLINK took part in the Pup of The Year competition, judged by Mr Frank Whyte. It had 23 entries of gundog and terrier dogs - and ‘Robbie’ won this class and later beat the winner of the bitch class to be overall winner on the day. Andrew had to return with him from Rugby for the final on Tuesday 6th August to meet the winners from the other 3 days, and to Andrew’s delight he won overall – so he has qualified for the final of the Pup Of The Year contest held next January 2014. Well done to the Jaeva team, it is such a good advertisement for the breed.

LEEDS

At last there was a gap in the showing calendar, with Leeds scheduling Norfolks without CCs on Saturday 27th July; it is held at the Harewood estate, and Pat Wilson (Sheltrice) was the judge. Best of Breed and Best Bitch was Mary Atkinson’s MOORTOP ANOTHER NO CHOICE from the Junior Bitch class, she is a repeat mating to her Ch Moortop No Choice, by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop x Moortop Shandy Choice, both were singletons as their names imply. Best Dog was Ruth Gee’s 8 month old puppy dog WATERCROFT DIAMOND DEALER also by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop but out of Watercroft Hot Stuff.

Reserve Best Dog was Jill Stevenson’s BRICKIN FINE AND DANDY (by Penmire Wayfarer – Brickin Neat And Tidy). Reserve Best Bitch and Best Puppy was Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC by Belleville Shoelace Maker out of Belleville Magic Dice.

EAST OF ENGLAND

It was held at the Peterborough showground on a very hot Saturday, 6th July where for once people were looking for shade to keep cool. There was an entry of 39 Norfolks with only one absentee among the 20 dogs, and 2 bitches absent from the 19 bitches entered. Mr Andrew Westwood was judging and his choice for Best of Breed and the bitch CC was Karen Hurrion’s CH VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE. She is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble, and this was her 4th CC.

Puppy dogs of high quality are not merely confined to puppy classes – there were two also entered in Post Graduate but Best Puppy came from the Junior Class with the Dog CC winner, JAEVA CUFFLINK, owned and bred by Martin Phillips; in his short career of four shows (one without CCs) he has won Puppy Group 4 twice and a RCC. His sire is the re-imported Jap Ch Jaeva Roger The Butler out of Know It All at Jaeva, who is by Vichea Clever Clogs out of Moortop Seabiscuit at Jaeva.

The dog RCC went to the winner of the puppy dog class Diane Jenkins’ KINSRIDGE CASH BACK; now nearly a year old he is by Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip; his litter brother KINSRIDGE QUIDS IN won the Post Graduate class. The bitch RCC went to Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE; she has won 2 CCs this year, the last one a week ago at Windsor; she is homebred by Watercroft Hot News out of Watercroft Get Smart, a daughter of Ch Belleville Smart Alec and Watercroft Hit And Miss.

WINDSOR

Terrier and Utility groups were Saturday 29th June this year. Mr Martin Phillips had three breeds to judge; Norfolks were first in the ring, now in an in-and-out tent, but it was pleasantly warm in the sunshine. 15 dogs and 24 bitches were entered with just five absentees. He gave the DCC and Best of Breed to Bev Ackling’s RUBY RUEBEN. He is the first Norfolk she has ever owned and was bought as a puppy from Mrs Susan Nevill-Gliddon, by Jaeva Gorden Bennet out of Jaeva Bee Good. His first CC was won last year at South Wales from Bill Browne-Cole. It has been a steep learning curve for Bev with trimming assistance from Lesley Harpham, as she is more used to showing horses.

It was also a second CC for Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE, homebred, she is by Watercroft Hot News out of Watercroft Get Smart and she had won her first CC this year at WELKS at the end of April from Cherry Howard.

Reserve Dog CC and Best Puppy was Diane Jenkins’ KINSRIDGE CASH BACK, and congratulations to him as he went on later in the afternoon to win Group 4 from Mr G A Hill in the Puppy Group.

Winning her first major award of BRCC was Andrea Smith’s black & tan JAVIDEL DEFINITELY MAYBE from the Junior Class. She is by Ch Belleville Angello out of Stridview Bluebell at Javidel, a repeat mating which had previously produced her CC winner, Javidel May Just Have Too. Then it was time to celebrate with Le Picnic. Elisabeth Matell started the great Windsor Strawberry Picnic several years ago, and exhibitors and friends were determined to keep the tradition going in her memory, everyone contributing something delicious to make it special. It was too a celebration of the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Linda Philip and her friends have taken over the mantel of organising the event and produced a splendid table with a beautifully decorated cake and huge celebration bottle of champagne in the name of Elizabeth and Elisabeth. It was a delicious feast after the breed and most of the Norwich judging had taken place, with friends and fellow exhibitors, including visitors from the United States.

BLACKPOOL

Norfolks no longer have CCs at Blackpool but there was strong competition for Mr Roger Crooks to judge on Friday 21st June. There were 8 dogs and 9 bitches present and Best of Breed and Best Dog went to CH MOORTOP NO CHOICE, owned and bred by Mary Atkinson.

The Reserve Best Dog and Best Puppy was Martin Phillips’ JAEVA CUFFLINK, who went on to win Puppy Group 4 later in the afternoon under Mrs Jill Peake. Best Bitch was Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s red puppy BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC from the Post Graduate Class with Reserve Best Bitch Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE.

BORDER UNION

Specialist judge, Mr David Saltmarsh (Pipridges) travelled to Kelso for Border Union on Saturday 15th June. According to one exhibitor it is a lovely show in a super venue, albeit quite a distance for most people to reach. Judging started in the outside rings, but everyone had to make a dash for shelter after just two classes and stayed undercover as it was a day of sun and sudden sharp showers. Best of Breed and the Dog CC, CH MOORTOP NO CHOICE and the Bitch CC winner, VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE are both sired by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop, and he was also the grandsire of the DRCC, BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF, so it was quite a dog family affair. This was the 5th CC for Mary Atkinson’s dog, he is out of Moortop Shandy Choice, by Brickin Smart Edition out of Ch Hobsons Choice at Moortop.

Winning her crowning 3rd CC was Karen Hurrion’s bitch; VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE* was one of six puppies out of Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble, who actually was carrying them when she was made up in September 2011 at the NTC of GB Championship Show by Eileen Needham. Wharfvalley Diamond Bright was from a successful litter bred by Patsy Green, by Brickin Smart Outlook out of Wharfvalley Rose Cut, his litter brother W Diamond Star won his first CC at Southern Counties this year.

V Cherry Ripple’s first CC was one last year at the Midland Counties Norfolk Terrier Association Championship show judged by Lesley Crawley, and her 2nd at Southern Counties under David Winsley in May plus Group 4. RDCC went to dual CC winner, BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF, a son of the BOB, Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Express at Blakens, a Jaeva Gorden Bennet daughter. His owner, Jackie Phillips was also very successful with her red puppy, BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES, who won the Bitch Reserve CC and Best Puppy. She is by Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge out of Ch Vichea Pick And Mix, and thus a half-sister to her two black & tan champions Blakens Toffee Kisses and Blakens Dolly Mixture, who were both Top Bitch in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

THREE COUNTIES

Five days after Southern Counties, on Thursday 5th June, exhibitors travelled to the showground below the Malvern Hills. Despite a glowing forecast of warm sunshine it was covered by a dense damp cloud which left humans and dogs shivering outside. We were second in the ring and the cloud melted away and the sun at last came through just as Best of Breed was being judged by Mrs Sherril Goodwin (Spitewinter). She drew a total entry of 39, consisting of 15 dogs with two absentees, and 24 bitches, with seven absent.

Winning his 2nd CC and Best of Breed on the same showground as WELKS at the end of April was BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF, bred, owned and shown now by Jackie Phillips, he is by Ch Moortop No Choice x Vision Express at Blakens. The bitch CC was a 4th for Jill Stevenson’s CH BRICKIN HOP AND SKIP, who was recently made up in Scotland. She is homebred by Brickin Smart Outlook out of Brickin Skip Away.

Two new puppies made an impact, both winning RCCs; Best Puppy went to Martin Phillips’ 8½ month red dog JAEVA CUFFLINK by his re-imported Jap Ch Roger The Butler out of Know It All at Jaeva, (Vichea Clever Clogs – Moortop Seabiscuit at Jaeva, a daughter of Ch Hobsons Choice at Moortop). The catalogue showed the puppy dog winner as Jaeva Cockrobin (NAF), but the Kennel Club has turned this name down. There were five dogs in the puppy dog class for a change.

Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE JUST MAGIC won a strong bitch puppy class, she is by Belleville Shoelace Maker, an unshown half- brother to Ch Belleville Blacklace but by Ch Penmire Wild Bramble at Brickin out of Belleville Lace Petticoat, responsible for her ‘Lace’ names. Just Magic’s dam, Belleville Magic Dice is by Rouletta Fameuse Le Smart out of the prolific Belleville Tumbling Dice – dam of Cathy’s successful ‘Dice’ offspring. Diane Jenkins’ puppy, KINSRIDGE QUIDS IN won a large Pup of the Year Dog Stakes class, but had to give way to the smooth mini dachshund bitch winner in the final on the day.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES

This show is now held at the Newbury Showground, which is an excellent venue with flat roadways, well mown grass and in-and-out tents; Norfolks were scheduled for Saturday 1st June, and amazingly the sun shone, but the wind still kept its icy bite. Mr David Winsley, a Sealyham specialist, was judging, and he drew an entry of 14 dogs with 2 absent and 23 bitches entered with 5 absent.

Best of Breed and winning her 2nd CC was Karen Hurrion’s VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE from the Limit Class and she went on to be Group 4 under Terrier Group Judge, Mrs Eileen Needham later in the afternoon. She is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Karen’s first champion, VALENTINES CHERRY CRUMBLE; Ripple was one of six puppies in the litter, and Crumble has just produced another six puppies!

The dog CC was the first one for WHARFVALLEY DIAMOND STAR, bred and owned by Patsy Green and out for the first time this year; he is a litter brother to the bitch CC’s sire, they are both by Brickin Smart Outlook out of Wharfvalley Rose Cut, a daughter of the Swedish imported Ch/Swe Ch Jiffy The Sky’s The Limit.

The dog RCC went to Jackie Phillips’ BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF (Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Express at Blakens). The bitch RCC was won by Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT TOP OF THE POPS, she is by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Watercroft Hot Cake, a daughter of Ch Belleville Angello.

Best Puppy for the 4th time was Diane Jenkins’ KINSRIDGE CASH BACK (by Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip). Rivalry in the breed for him has only been in the challenge and puppy challenge, as there has been a dearth of puppy dogs at shows so far this year. This time he had much more competition as he went into the Puppy Group and finished PG 4 from the Judge, Mr Ron Menaker.

BATH

The Kennel Club took Norfolk CCs away from Bath some years ago, a pity as it is a very nice venue where the Bath Canine Society own their ground, and the grass is nicely mowed, with a special track put down to make it easier to drag trolleys from the entrance of the showground. It was not their fault that it was bitterly cold, only 6˚ centigrade. Exhibitors were reluctant to emerge from the in-and-out tents which offered slight protection from the biting wind, and took refuge under cover until the final lineup and placings.

Judging Norfolks was Mr D W Shields, whose choice for Best of Breed and Best Dog was last year’s top dog, Mrs Beatrice Phillips, Andrew Gullick and Sue Wilding’s CH JAEVA MADE IN GOLD, who is by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Jaeva Fancy That) Best Bitch was Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT TOP OF THE POPS, another Ch K Top Gun daughter out of Watercroft Hot Cake and RBB was her WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE, homebred by Watercroft Hot News – Watercroft Get Smart. Christine Hitchen’s black & tan puppy KREATIN TELLIN TALES was RBD and BP; he is also by Watercroft Hot News out of Kreatin Kiss N Tell.

SCOTTISH KENNEL CLUB

The annual long journey for English exhibitors north to the Royal Highland Showground at Ingliston, near Edinburgh took place on Sunday 19th May where Mr Colin Powell was giving CCs to Norfolks for the second time; he drew an entry of 18 with 5 dogs and 7 bitches present.

Diane Jenkins’ puppy KINSRIDGE CASH BACK hit the jackpot, winning the Dog CC, Best of Breed and made the short list in a strong Terrier Group. He is by Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip; he has also been Best Puppy at all the three shows he has attended.

Many congratulations to Jill Stevenson and her *BRICKIN HOP AND SKIP winning her vital 3rd qualifying CC at two and a half years old. Homebred, she is by Brickin Smart Outlook out of Brickin Skip Away – her pedigree can be seen in another folder. She won her first CC last year at Border Union under Cathy Thompson-Morgan and her second at the NTC of GB show last September from Diane Jenkins. She has also won 4 RCCs, the last one recently at WELKS.

The RCCs both went to Jackie Phillips, first with her junior dog BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF (by Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Express at Blakens), then her red puppy, BLAKENS SUGAR CANDY KISSES was chosen for the Bitch RCC – she is by Brenin Bazaar at Kinsridge out of b&t Ch Vichea Pick And Mix. So puppies did well in Scotland.

THE NATIONAL

This is the second of three championship shows held at the Staffordshire County showground. Terrier day was the first day of the four day show on Thursday 10th May, and judging Norfolks for the first time was Mr Harry O’Donoghue. He drew an entry of 31, with 8 dogs and 16 bitches present, and his choice for the Dog CC and Best of Breed was Mary Atkinson’s CH MOORTOP NO CHOICE, winning his 4th CC – he won his 3rd CC at Crufts this year. He is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Moortop Shandy Choice. Breeding is now so international, and nearly all pedigrees show the influence of overseas dogs. He traces back to German, Swedish, American and Finnish dogs, though their roots originally come from Nanfan, Ragus, Ickworth and Colonsay stock.

The bitch CC was also a fourth CC for CH VILLASSA ALL GOLD; bred by Karen Hurrion but in joint ownership with Phil Davies, she is by Ch Belleville Angello out of Tyark Treacle, a daughter of SA Ch Macsnest Nik The Kaluha at Collaton (imp) who came back with Linda and Michael Philip when they moved to England from South Africa, and he has proved to be a remarkable success at stud here – 17 out of 22 champions and CC winners in the last two years trace back to him in their pedigree and thus carry his black and tan genes.

The dog RCC went to Andrea Smith’s JAVIDEL MAY JUST HAVE TOO; he is also by Ch Belleville Angello, but out of Stridview Bluebell, sired by Ch Jaeva Hot Shot, another son of SA Ch Macsnest Nik The Kaluha at Collaton; he has one CC to his name and was the RCC at National Terrier in April.

The bitch RCC winner AM CH YARROW VENERIE TIP THE SCALE has recently arrived from the USA, she is owned by Beth Sweigart and Pam Beale, she is a champion in the USA, and her litter brother black & tan GCh Yarrow Venerie Ticket To Ride was Best of Breed at Westminster this year. A red bitch, she is by Ch/Am Ch Cause For Celebration out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip. Best Puppy at consecutive shows is her full brother, a year younger, KINSRIDGE CASH BACK, owned by Diane Jenkins. This family of dogs appear to treat the Atlantic Ocean like a puddle, as both sire, Cause For Celebration and his dam Cracknor Cause Celebre both won titles in England and the USA, and K Hot Tip and her daughter Y V Tip the Scale have spent time in both countries.

WEST OF ENGLAND LADIES KENNEL SOCIETY

Norfolks were judged by Mrs Cherry Howard at WELKS on Sunday 28th April at the Three Counties showground at Malvern. It was a cold day with a biting wind but as it was dry showing took place outside. The dogs themselves in their weatherproof coats didn’t mind the cold but I can’t say the same for the humans! Two people who were bathed in the warm glow of success were Jackie Phillips, when her junior dog BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF won his first Dog CC and Best of Breed, and Ruth Gee who won her first ever Bitch CC with her WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE. Congratulations to both of them. The dog had been Best in Show at the Club Open show under Becky Baldwin a fortnight before; he is by newly crowned Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Express at Blakens, who had been bred by Jackie’s sister, Margaret Horne by Jaeva Gorden Bennet out of Kinsridge Mischief Maker, a Ch Krisma Crossfire daughter.

Ruth Gee’s bitch had been Reserve Best Bitch at the Club Open show too; she is by Watercroft Hot News out of Watercroft Get Smart. Ruth had won three RCCs last year with Watercroft Hot News’ litter sister Watercroft Hot Love, but a first CC is a very special moment.

RCC in dogs went to Norma Newton’s STRATHINVER SMART ENOUGH from the Open class, he is by the Swedish imported Guestlings Fairbanks at Kinsridge out of Strathinver Red Red Rose.

The RCC in bitches was awarded to Jill Stevenson’s BRICKIN HOP AND SKIP, who has 2 CCs to her name; home bred she is by Brickin Smart Outlook out of Brickin Skip Away.

Best Puppy went to Diane Jenkins’ 9 month old dog KINSRIDGE CASH BACK, who was born in England having come over in embryo from the USA in his dam Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip after she had been covered by Ch Am/Ch Cause For Celebration, a son of the famous Coco (Ch/Am Ch Cracknor Cause Celebre). It is good to have some Cracknor bloodlines back in this country.

NTC of GB SPRING OPEN SHOW

This show was held after the AGM in the afternoon of Saturday 13th April, at the Brackley Leisure Centre in Northamptonshire; our judge was a Norwich specialist, Mrs Becky Baldwin; she drew an excellent entry of 63 but this was rather spoilt by absentees; of 23 dogs entered only 10 appeared, though there were 40 different bitches entered and 26 were present.

Best in Show and Best Dog was last year’s top puppy, BLAKENS XPRESS YOURSELF by Ch Moortop No Choice out of Vision Express at Blakens, owned and handled by Jackie Phillips. Best Opposite Sex, Reserve Best In Show and Best Bitch was Karen Hurrion’s VILLASSA CHERRY RIPPLE, another junior, who is also sired by a dog owned by Mary Atkinson, Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Karen’s first champion, Ch Valentines Cherry Crumble.

Reserve Best Dog went to Beverley Ackling’s RUBY RUEBEN, bred by Mrs S Nevill-Gliddon by Jaeva Gorden Bennet out of Jaeva Bee Good. Reserve Best Bitch was the winner of the Open Bitch class, Ruth Gee’s WATERCROFT WEDDING BELLE, homebred, she is by Watercroft Hot News out of Watercroft Get Smart. Best Puppy making his debut was Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE ROLL CALL. A red dog winning the MPD class he is by Penmire Makori at Strathinver out of Ch Belleville Roll The Dice.

NATIONAL TERRIER

This group championship show for terriers only saw two more ‘old’ dogs finally gain their titles. National Terrier is traditionally held on the first Saturday in April, this year the 6th at the Bingley Hall on the Staffordshire County showground.

Norfolks were judged by Mr Andrew Gullick who made it a special day for two owners. He gave the qualifying 3rd CC to *ROXWAY DIRECT LINE, owned and exhibited by John Mitchell. It is quite a feat to make up a champion from the first Norfolk he has owned. Born in March 2007 this dog was bred by Mrs Tricia Broom by Penorth Story Line at Roxway out of Roxway Quick Step; he won his first CC under Martin Phillips at WELKS in 2009 with his second from Andrew Brace at the NTC of GB Ch Show in September 2010. Last year he won a RCC at the Three Counties under Tan Nagrecha, but only went to five shows.

Jane Devereux though both owned and bred her first champion with the 3rd crowning BCC for her *VICHEA DOT AND CARRY and went on to represent the breed in the main ring as Best of Breed. Homebred, she is by Vichea Clever Clogs out of her CC winner, Vichea Hot Gossip. Her bitch, with seven Vichea generations behind her on her tail female line, won her first CC in 2010 as a junior under Mr Albert Wight, and her second at Bournemouth last year from Mr Roger Thomas. Jane has regularly been in the Top 20 list of breeders, and was the breeder of Ch Vichea Pick And Mix, sold as a puppy to Jackie Phillips with whom she had amazing success. So many congratulations to both our two new champions – their pedigrees can be seen in another file.

We now have four new champions from two shows. The RCC in dogs went to Andrea Smith’s JAVIDEL MAY JUST HAVE TOO by Ch Belleville Angello out of Stridview Bluebell, he won one CC as a puppy in 2011 at Darlington, and a RCC last year at Border Union. The bitch RCC was a first such major award for Martyn Craddock and John Collins’ FONTANESI GOLDEN TWIST by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Back to Black for Fontanesi, a daughter of Ch/Fin Ch Heilurihännän From Me To You. Best Puppy went to Christine Hitchen’s 7 month old black & tan KREATIN TELLIN TALES by Watercroft Hot News out of Kreatin Kiss ‘N’ Tell.

CRUFTS

All the dogs shown here have had to qualify by winning a Stud Book number or being placed at a championship show giving CCs to the breed in the previous year. The crowded Ring 11 of the NEC at Birmingham was a great meeting point for Norfolk breeders and visitors from this country and abroad who had come to watch specialist Bryan Claydon (Brymarden) judge the breed, who were first in the ring on the first day of the show on Thursday 8th March.

It was a case of ‘at last’ for both our CC winners. Mary Atkinson’s MOORTOP NO CHOICE was rewarded in the challenge with the precious third qualifying CC after winning a very strong Open Dog class. He had won two CCs as a puppy in 2011, but had continually to take the back seat last year against the two top runners who had dominated the dog classes, so he was delighted finally to turn the tables on them both. A singleton puppy, he is by Wharfvalley Diamond Bright at Moortop out of Moortop Shandy Choice. He had won his first CC at Scottish Kennel Club show in 2011 from Richard Allen, and his second later in the year under Patricia Broom at Bournemouth. He also has 4 RCCs and 6 BPs.

The Bitch CC and Best of Breed went to Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s BELLEVILLE HONEY NUT CRUNCH, another one who has been desperately chasing her qualifying CC. She already has three tickets to her name, but they were all won when she was a puppy, and she needed to win another CC when she was over 1 year in age to gain her title. She is by Ch Belleville Blacklace out of Belleville Fruit ’N Nut. Last year she won the BCC & BP at Southern Counties from Finnish judge Hans Lehtinen, she did the double again at Three Counties under Tan Nagrecha and again at Windsor from Bill Gray – and then won three more RCCs. So many congratulations to both our CC winners becoming new champions. A great start to the year.

The RCC in dogs went to last year’s top dog, CH JAEVA MADE IN GOLD. He has 13 CCs plus 11 Best of Breeds in his tally; he was bred by Martin Phillips by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Jaeva Fancy That, and is in the joint ownership of Mrs Beatrice Phillips, Andrew Gullick who handles him in the ring, and Sue Wilding.

The bitch Reserve CC put up a gallant performance. CH KINSRIDGE TOP SCORE was unfazed by having to have three handlers. Her owner, Diane Jenkins managed to break an ankle a fortnight before, and was only allowed to put a foot to the ground to walk briefly, but not to stand for long. So Chrissie Turner stood by to move her round the ring in her class, but she had to handle another of Diane’s class winners in the challenge. Beth Sweigart took her over to move her for the final up and down to win the RCC – Beth had piloted her half brother, Am Gr Ch Yarrow Venerie Ticket To Ride to win Best of Breed at Westminster in New York earlier this year. Top Score is by Ch Kinsridge Top Gun out of Am Ch Kinsridge Hot Tip.

Best Puppy went to Ruth Gee with another Top Gun daughter, WATERCROFT TOP OF THE POPS - from the six entries in her class, she had also to beat her two litter sisters, their dam is Watercroft Hot Cake.
